The main hero in Gorky 17 is Cole Sullivan, a fascinatingly complex character. Play for a while and you’ll feel yourself taking on his traits and sharing his emotions, above all his very personal feelings towards the other characters and their environment. How did we achieve this? Simple ... by combining the pure excitement of battle with the element of surprise and exploration found in adventures.
In addition to fighting Turn-Based battles against realistic monsters, you can also shoot off locks, pick up newspapers, converse with other characters and even solve some tricky puzzles! This, in a nutshell, is the concept behind Gorky 17 – combine the best of the genres to create the best game possible. Here’s a little nibble ... you’re engaged in a heavy battle against a deformed hybrid. He’s getting the upper hand, but is down to his last shot. Suddenly he starts begging for his life, pleading with you to show mercy. He offers to reveal the location of a rebel ammunition dump down in the sewers – he even gives you the key! You agree and follow him. But ... it’s a trap! Suddenly four giant monsters attack from all sides. Tricky eh?
The year is 2008. NATO intelligence reports that, for some unknown reason, the Russian army has destroyed one of its so-called "secret cities" known by the code word 'Gorky 17'. This exact replica of an American city was used to train the best Russian spies during the Cold War. "The city’s been deserted since the collapse of the Iron Curtain", comes the reassuring answer from the Kremlin, "now that we are friends, we no longer need such monuments to mistrust". But NATO commanders aren’t buying this PR exercise – they know that Gorky 17 had another, far more important purpose. This was where the Soviet Union conducted its most secret military experiments.
The following year, as the first step toward Poland’s integration into NATO, a contingent of multi-national troops enters the ruined city. Poking through the rubble, some scouts discover an old laboratory complex. Further investigations reveal little, so the soldiers proceed downtown, through seemingly empty streets.
But... strange things start happening! Suddenly, they find themselves surrounded by hideously deformed creatures – parts of their bodies look human, while other parts resemble a horrifying mixture of animal and insect. Something went terribly awry here.
Despite the best efforts of NATO officials, word spreads of the discovery, as reporters fly in from all over the globe to witness the ultimate freak show. CNN soon announces plans to broadcast live via satellite. NATO is in danger of completely losing control of the situation. Destroying the city is out of the question, so troops are sent in to hermetically seal off the area, which is promptly declared top secret and off-limits to all but a select few. A team of three highly-skilled specialists, led by a Canadian named Cole Sullivan is sent in by NATO commanders to discover the facts behind this startling turn of events. Will they discover what went on in Gorky 17? And what awaits them should they delve too deeply into the past? And, last but not least, will they survive the mission.
🌍️ Wikipedia:
Gorky 17 (released as Odium in North America) is a turn-based tactics tactical role-playing game developed by Polish developer Metropolis Software and published by Monolith Productions for Microsoft Windows in 1999. The game was later ported to Linux by Hyperion Entertainment and published by Linux Game Publishing in 2006. Hyperion Entertainment also announced an AmigaOS 4[2] version of the game, but nothing was heard of the port since then. At the Amiga30th Anniversary Dinner in 2015 the AmigaOS version was finally demonstrated in a near finished state with an estimated release of Christmas 2015.
Gameplay
The game features two modes: In the real-time 'exploration' mode, the player controls game characters using a mouse in a point-and-click manner to navigate the player characters through the city as well as interacting with various objects in the game world. Combat takes place in preset encounters located in specific areas of each level map. In the combat mode, the screen is divided into squares with player and computer-controlled characters taking turns trying to eliminate the opposing party. In one turn each game character can move by a certain number of squares and use a weapon once, or decide to take cover instead. Weapons have different tactical effects, for example the pistol can only be fired orthogonally, while the rifle can be fired orthogonally and diagonally. The game ends if any player-controlled character dies.
Plot
The player commands a small group of NATO soldiers who must reveal the mystery behind the sudden appearance of hybrid creatures in a former Soviet military base at a small Polish town near Lubin. The area is surrounded by NATO troops and media from all over the world, and the first group sent into town disappears without a trace. The main hero of the story is the 40-year-old Canadian soldier Cole Sullivan, a commando team member with extensive scientific knowledge. His team's task is to explain the hybrids' presence and to find the missing members of Group One.

🌍️ Wikipedia:
